Northumbria Police

Northumbria Police serves a population of 1.5 million people and covers an area of more than 2,000 square miles in the North East of England.

  • Site: Southwick Police Station
  • Project: Internal lighting
  • Luminaires: 260
  • Payback: 28 months
  • Carbon Saving: 54.5 tonnes per annum

The force is a major employer and provider of services to the community and is committed to minimising the environmental impact of its activities and operations.

As part of the force’s Carbon Reduction Commitment project, Envirolux was asked to develop an energy efficient lighting scheme for specific areas of Southwick, a police station in Sunderland.

Working with the force Estates team, detailed survey work allowed Envirolux to design a solution using a mix of Envirolux’s LED and T5 high frequency fluorescent lighting.

This took into account the varied operational requirements of the staff working at Southwick while meeting the force’s sustainable development objectives.

With Southwick operating 24-hours a day, Envirolux developed an installation programme with the engineering team from Rosedale Utilities which provided the flexibility to work around the requirements of the site.

The installation was completed ahead of schedule and with no disruption to the operation of the site.

Clare Swift, Sustainable Development Advisor at Northumbria Police, said:

"The new lighting was installed in November 2012 and we have seen an average 15% reduction in total electricity consumption at Southwick Police Station each month for four months.”

Envirolux offer a complete lighting service, able to design, manufacture and deliver custom built solutions using the latest technology. Our bespoke approach can be tailored to balance requirements such as the aesthetics of the location, maintenance intervals and energy conservation, while providing an improvement in the quality and level of lighting.
